Porthgain is a small coastal hamlet on the north coast of St Davids peninsula.
Porthgain means ''chisel port'' in English. From around 1850 slate, then brick, and then granite were shipped from the harbour. You can still see evidence of these activities today with the brick built hoppers, lime kiln, harbour and pilots house.
Porthgain is the perfect location for launching kayaks! Follow the Pembrokeshire coast path to Abereiddi beach and back - a truly stunning walk! Explore the old quarry above Porthgain and the slate quarries at Abereiddi. There is an interesting beach at Traeth Llyfn that has a steel staircase!
The Harbour Lights gallery has a great choice of original artwork and prints from contemporary artists! The Alun Davies gallery is located in one of the row of cottages on the edge of the village called Y Strydd or The Street! The cottages were once quarry workers cottages 'Crog lofts'. The lofts were where the workers slept.
The Sloop Inn pub dates from 1743 and offers delicious food and a cosy, quaint atmosphere! The Shed has won various food awards such as AA Wales seafood restaurant of the year, AA rosettes and was a winner of Wales true taste! If you fancy some lobster at home or your self catering accommodation then the house nest door to The Sloop sells live or cooked lobster.
