Wareham is an historic market town also known as Wareham Town, is a civil parish, in the English county of Dorset. The town is situated on the River Frome eight miles southwest of Pool. Because of its strategic position, this has made it an important settlement throughout its history. Nearby Neolithic pits have been found to contain Flint and pottery fragments dating back to 3700 BCE.
By the end of the Saxon period, Wareham had become one of the most important towns in the country housing two mints for the issue of Royal Money.
Nowadays, Wareham offers the convenience of a range of interesting shops and restaurants, banks, 8 pubs, a museum and a Tourist Information Centre. Nearby attractions include Poole Harbour, Corfe castle, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, the town of Dorchester and the famous Jurassic Coast.
Events in Wareham
Wareham has a Saturday market on the Quay and a Thursday market at Cottees salesroom on East Street. There is also the Wareham Home Producers market in the United Reformed Church every Thursday, 8.30am - 11.00.
Every Wednesday throughout the summer there is a programme of fundraising events from music to fireworks which take place down at the Quay. A lot of the towns' pubs have live music at weekends and Bank Holidays.
There are several annual events which include Wareham Music festival, Swanage Purbeck and Bournemouth Folk Festivals. Keep an eye out for the infamous Wareham Whalers, shanty Crew!
Where is Wareham?
Wareham town is situated on the main Lytchett to Swanage road and at the eastern terminus of the Dorchester to Sherbourne main route. Both of these roads now bypass the town centre. The town has its own railway station on the Weymouth to Waterloo line.
