About Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is a coastal town in West Dorset. In the 2011 Census the town's parish had a population of 3,671.  The town is noted for the fossils found in the cliffs and beaches.  Of course this is a vast subject and to discover what fossils, from what period of the Earth's 185 million year history you can find in Lyme Regis, click here.  This part of the coastline is known as the Jurassic Coast and is a World Heritage Site.

More recent points of interest are that the harbour wall here is known as "The Cobb" and features in the novel 'Persuasion' by Jane Austen.  The harbour wall was also used in the film 'The French Lieutenant's Woman', by local writer John Fowles, even though the majority of the filming for that production was done in Charlestown in Cornwall.  The first mention of this harbour wall is as far back as 1328 so it's no wonder the film companies love it!  One of the Sons of Lyme Regis was Admiral Sir George Somers.  He was Mayor of Lyme Regis and a parliamentarian, whose claim to fame is that he founded the Somers Isles, better known as Bermuda and the town is twinned with St. George's, Bermuda.

Today the town boasts a wealth of shops and is a thriving and bustling town.  It is a popular holiday destination and well worth a visit.
