About Bere Regis

The village itself was established as a  small settlement during Saxon times, much the same as most other English towns and villages.  By the13th Century it had grown and was given Town status and was made a free borough during the reign of King Edward (1272-1307)  This could have been due to two main factors; one being the importance of the annual fair on Woodbury Hill which originated early in the 12th century to become one of the largest in the south of England, and the second King John's visits during his reign (1199-1216). From then on the fame and fortunes of Bere Regis were closely bound to those of the powerful and influential Turberville family who were lords of the manor from the 13th to the 18th centuries.

Nowadays little can be seen of this however the magnificent church has survived from mediaeval times. A full history on the village can be found on their website.
