About South Molton
South Molton is a small town in Devon. The town is on the River Mole. According to the 2001 census the civil parish of South Molton had a population of 4,093. This town has quite a historical past in in 1655 that it was the scene of a three hour street battle between the Parliamentarians and Colonel John Penruddock who, along with Sir Joseph Wagstaffe organised and led the Royalist uprising in the Westcountry. On 11 March Penruddock, with between 300 and 400 other Cavaliers, took Salisbury and raised the Royal standard. The next morning he led his followers out of Salisbury, heading west through Blandford, Sherborne and Yeovil in the hope of picking up more supporters, but a single troop of horse of the New Model Army under Captain Unton Crook defeated them after a three-hour street fight in this very town on 14 March. Most of the Royalists either fled or were killed but Crook captured Penruddock and the other ringleaders. Penruddock was beheaded at Exeter in May 1655.
Today South Molton is a well-built market town trading mostly in sheep and cattle. It is situated just to the south of Exmoor about half a mile south of the A361 North Devon link road.
