Plymouth is a city on the south coast of Devon. Plymouth's history goes back as far as the Bronze Age, and deposits, dating back to that period, including bones of Homo sapiens, have been found in local caves. The first settlement was at Mount Batten and this settlement continued to grow as a trading post for the Roman Empire. In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers left Plymouth for North America from The Mayflower Steps on the Barbican. Today the city is home to around 256,384 people, as recorded in the 2011 census. Plymouth is a university town and with the ninth largest university in the United Kingdom by number of students, and the largest operational naval base in Western Europe, HMS DEVONPORT. The city has ferry links to France and Spain.
