Very Efficient Team!

"Very efficient team! Your driver found us on time, even though the house we were staying at was right at the end of a remote lane. The dispatcher had made a big effort to get all the location details. A pleasant chat on the history of the Lizard area made the journey to Redruth station an education. 5*s!"

About Newton Abbot

Newton Abbot is a market town and in the county of Devon.  It is located on the River Teign, with a population of 23,580 as recorded in the 2001 census.  The growth of the town was due to South Devon Railways having their locomotive work near the town.  This has now closed and the site is an industrial estate.   There is however a very well used racecourse near the town which of course has a good effect on the the economy for the area.   There are records of human habitation in this area as far back as Neolithic times as traces of Neolithic people have been found at nearby Berry's Wood Hill Fort near Bradley Manor.  Evidence of later Roman Occupation in the form of a pavement and coins have been found.  There has been a thriving market in Newton Abbot for over 750 years.    Just 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of Newton Abbot lie the large ball clay workings of the Bovey basin.  This became a thriving industry, providing clay for such industries as Wedgwood China.  The Stover Canal was built specifically to transport the clay from the workings, to the port of Teignmouth but nowadays the clay is transported by road.  The Stover Canal Society Society was formed following a public meeting held in February 1999 with the aim of preserving and restoring the canal.  The canal was sold to Teignbridge District Council for the sum of £1 and work is now ongoing to restore this canal as an amenity for the area.
