Kingsbridge stands on a 'ria' - and although it is referred to as an estuary, there is in fact no river feeding the estuary which makes Kingsbridge quite unusual. It is however fed from several streams but the main bulk of the water is the incoming tide from the English Channel and the Celtic Sea. Kingsbridge is the first crossing over the estuary and is some 5 miles inland. The waterway was formed by prehistoric glacial action and is a 'flooded river'. Managing an estuary is no easy task and to find out more about this local task click here. Historically, the town formed around a bridge built in or before the 10th century between the royal estates of Alvington, to the west, and Chillington, to the east. This gave the area the name of Kingsbridge (old English spelling Kyngysbrygge). This is a typical South Devon town full of ‘olde world’ charm but with a bustling town centre with small shops offering a wide variety of merchandise. There may be just a few of the obligatory chain stores but otherwise it is a very unique shopping experience!
A notable son of Kingsbridge, William Cookworthy, discovered china clay in Devon in the 1700s, and it was this which gave birth to the porcelain industry – you can learn about it at the Cookworthy Museum, which also gives you a ‘potted’ history of the town. Also worth a look is the Kingsbridge Community Garden, a beautiful working organic garden run by local volunteers.
