Honiton is a market town and civil parish in Devon, situated close to the River Otter. According to the Office of National Statistics, in 2009 Honiton had a population of approximately 11,822. Historically, the town developed along the route of the Fosse Way, which is the ancient Roman road linking Exeter to Lincoln. Honiton was an important stopping point along this route. The town is mentioned in the Domesday Book as Honetone, meaning a farm belonging to Huna. Honiton became an important town, well known for lace making. This cottage industry was introduced in the Elizabethan period by Flemish immigrants. During the 17th century thousands of people produced lace by hand in their homes. This skill endured over a long time and in the 19th century Queen Victoria's wedding dress was made of Honiton lace. Another local skill and industry was pottery. A large fire destroyed most of the town in the mid 1800s and many of the buildings were re-built with Georgian style houses. Today Honiton is a thriving Market Town and tourist base for visitors wishing to explore the west country.
