Clovelly is a small village in the the county of Devon. It is a major tourist attraction, and famous for its beautiful scenery and fascinating history. There is an extremely steep car-free cobbled main street, looking out over the Bristol Channel and thick woods effectively shelter the town from the outside world, creating a microclimate so mild that even the most tender plants can flourish. In the 2011 Census the civil parish itself which actually includes the Isle of Lundy had a population of just 443 people, 50 fewer than ten years previously.
Motor vehicles are not allowed in the main street, although there is a road leading to the harbour with parking limited to guests staying at the only public house, and to locals with permits. Visitors can park at the end of the B3237 road above the village, at the visitor centre.
Since the middle of the 13th Century, Clovelly has been associated with only three families and today the estate is still in the private ownership of the family that have owned the estate since 1738. To read about the history and how Clovelly came to be in the ownership of John Rous click here
