Barnstaple is a former river-port, large town, civil parish in north Devon built on the River Taw. Barnstaple is the main town of North Devon and claims to be the oldest borough in the United Kingdom. The parish of Barnstaple has a population of 23,710. The area has been populated since the 9th century, probably originally at Pilton on the bank of the River Yeo. Pilton is still a suburb on the northern edge of the present day town. Central to the modern town is the historic Pannier Market which voted amongst the top ten food markets in the country. Downstream the River Taw joins the River Torridge and enters the Bristol Channel at Appledore.

Where is Barnstaple?
Barnstaple lies 68 miles (109 km) west-south-west of Bristol and 50 miles (80 km) north of Plymouth. It is 34 miles (55 km) northwest of Exeter. Not surprisingly the town is situated at the lowest crossing point of the River Taw where its estuary starts to widen, about 7 miles (11 km) inland from Barnstaple (or Bideford) Bay in the Bristol Channel. On the north side of the town, the River Taw is joined by the River Yeo, the source of which is on Berry Down, near Combe Martin. The largest part of the town is on the east bank of the river, connected to the western side by Barnstaple Long Bridge, an ancient bridge with 16 arches. A few more approximate straight line distances: Land's end is 101 miles (162.5 km) to the south west whilst Central London lies 173 miles (278.5 km) to the north east.
Where can our Barnstaple taxis meet you?
Probably the most central place, if you need a landmark, is the entrance to the Pannier Market in Butcher's Row, or outside the Queen's Theatre in Boutport Street, Another good place is the junction of Joy Street and Boutport Street as there are a few seats there. But don't forget that we can pick you up from your home or work address or anywhere that you happen to be whether it's a shop or a pub, hospital or hairdressers.
