About Wadebridge

Wadebridge (Cornish:  Ponswad) is a civil parish and town in north Cornwall.   The town is built on both sides of the River Camel, 5 miles upstream and to the east of Padstow.  According to the Census in 2001 the population is 6,222.  Originally there were two parishes, Egloshayle and St Breock situated either side of the River Camel.  It was the crossing point of the river and the area was called Wade.  However it was a dangerous crossing point.  There was a chapel on either side of the river where travellers would pray at one chapel for a safe crossing, and then give thanks at the other chapel if they survived!   During the 15th Century the vicar of Egloshayle was distressed at the number of human and animal lives lost during the crossing of the river so he suggested the building of a bridge.  After the construction of the bridge the town was called Wadebridge (obviously!)  The town was previously connected to the national railway network, and the closure of the line in 1960 resulted in the creation of the Camel Trail, a recreational route for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.   Wadebridge today is a very busy shopping, market and tourist town, with the Camel Trail attracting thousands of visitors.

Events in Wadebridge
