Truro (Cornish: Truru) is a city and Civil Parish in Cornwall. As the County Town of Cornwall, the city is the centre for administration, leisure and retail, with a population recorded in the 2001 census of 17,431. It is the only city in the county of Cornwall and the most southern city in Mainland Britain. Truro initially grew as an important centre of trade because of its port on the Truro River, and then as a Stannary Town. A Stannary Town is one situated in a tin mining area and where the assay offices and other administrative functions connected with tine mining are located. The Truro Cathedral which you now see was completed in 1910. During the 12th century there was a castle at the top of what is now Castle Street, and the Courts of Justice (Truro Crown Court) now stands on this site. Today Truro is a vibrant and busy town offering boutique shops alongside national chain stores. Cafes, restaurants and public houses abound and there is something for everyone!
