Stithians (Cornish: Stedhyans), also known as St Stythians, is a village and civil parish in Cornwall. Its population (2001) is 2,004. The parish is mainly agricultural. The River Kennall runs through the parish and during the 19th century, this river provided power for a flour mill and a number of gunpowder mills as well as machinery at a foundry, and a paper mill! Stithians is a very typical and traditional Cornish village. The architecture comprises a great many granite cottages which more recently have been interspersed with modern buildings. The surrounding countryside is mainly farmland and some woodland. The village offers many facilities including a Village store, which also sells newspapers/magazines and incorporates the Post Office. There are two churches, a public house and a Fish and Chip shop. The large reservoire nearby, Stithians Lake, offers water sports facilities, bird watching and walking.
Events in Stithians
Each year on the Monday nearest the 10th July sees the Stithians Show. This is one of the largest one-day agricultural shows in the UK. The attendance is in excess of 20,000. The Show, first held in 1834, has been held continuously since then except for several years during the two World Wars and there was no show in 2001 due to the national emergency with the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease. The show is held on land at nearby Kennall Farm which is owned by the Agricultural Association. To find out more about Stithians Show click on the link. Stithians Lake Country Park is also nearby.
