About St. Ives
St Ives (Cornish Porth Ia, meaning St Ia's cove) is a fishing port, seaside town and civil parish in Cornwall and lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent entirely on fishing but the decline in fishing has caused a shift in commercial emphasis and the town now relies primarily on tourism. The town has achieved several awards over recent years for best seaside town. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. It has become renowned for its number of artists and this is one of the reasons St Ives was chosen to house the Tate. Building work began in 1991 and The Tate Gallery, St Ives opened in June 1993. In just six months it welcomed over 120,000 visitors – 50,000 more than the original target for the entire year! Since then, the gallery has been an outstanding success with an average of 240,000 visitors per year.
