About St Austell
St. Austell is a bustling market town in mid Cornwall and central to the Clay Industry. Situated close to the south coast and overshadowed to the north as it is by ethereal white mini-mountains, the spoil heaps of the china-clay industry it could be described as having an eerie atmosphere to the landscape, especially at night. St Austell is locally referred to as "Snozzle" and the general area referred to as 'Clay Country'. William Cookworthy discovered the clay in 1755, and with the opening of the pits to mine the clay St. Austell’s population and prosperity soon began to grow. The mineral Kao-Lin, an essential ingredient in the manufacture of porcelain, had hitherto only been found in northern China. Today Cornwall still exports clay, which is also used to produce paint, paper and is used in some medicines.
St Austell is arguably one of the six largest centres of population in Devon and Cornwall and the largest single conurbation in Cornwall. In the Office for National Statistics mid-term estimates for 2010 the population was 30,800. St Austell is also home to the Eden Project, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Wheal Martyn, and the Roseland Observatary, in nearby St Stephen are all top tourist attractions.
