Saltash (Cornish:- Essa) is a town and civil parish in Cornwall. It has a population of 14,964 as recorded in the 2001 census. Saltash is situated in the south east of Cornwall, facing Plymouth across the River Tamar and is said to be "the gateway to Cornwall". The word Saltash means ash tree by the salt mill. Saltash is the largest town within the East Cornwall area and is in fact one of the largest in the county of Cornwall. Probably the most famous sight is the Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge. The Bridge was opened by HRH Prince Albert on 2 May 1859. It carries the railway line across the River Tamar, linking Cornwall to Devon. Alongside it is the Tamar Bridge, a toll bridge opened in 1961 and at that time claimed the distinction of being the longest suspension bridge in the United Kingdom. In 2001 it became the world's first suspension bridge to be widened (from three to five lanes) using cantilevers and the world's first bridge to undergo strengthening and widening work while remaining open to traffic. The bridge carries the A38 trunk road and like the Brunel Bridge links the two counties of Devon and Cornwall.
