Porthleven is a town and fishing port near Helston in Cornwall. It is the most southerly port on the island of Great Britain and was originally developed as a harbour of refuge, when this part of the Cornish coastline was recognised as a black spot for wrecks in days of sail. Nearby Loe Bar was particularly infamous, with swimmers and surfers still being warned off the area to this day. The population of Porthleven was recorded by the United Kingdom Census 2001 as 3,190. Porthleven is a vibrant town which centres mostly around the harbour, where the relaxing environment catering for the needs of the Holiday maker. Boat and fishing trips are available from the harbour and cafes and restaurants line the harbour side, creating an almost continental atmosphere. The town enjoys the benefits of the Gulf Stream which of course has a warming effect and results in sightings of basking sharks and other marine wildlife on a regular basis from the coast paths near the town.
Events in Porthleven
Each year the town hosts the Porthleven Food Festival which brings in over 10,000 visitors each year. Since the early 1970s the RNLI have held a Lifeboat Day which is always very successful with a variety of events including stalls and refreshments, demonstrations and entertainments. Where is Porthleven?
Helston lies 2.5 miles (3.8 km) to the north east, and Penzance 10,5 (17 km) miles across Mounts Bay to the west and in the same direction Land's End is 18 miles (29 km). The town of St Ives is 9 miles (15 km) to the north west and Newquay 24 miles (39 km) to the north east.
