Perranzabuloe coastal village is located just two miles inland from Perranporth, which boasts of it's fantastic beach stretching on for some 3 miles of golden sand.
The name on the Perranzabuloe Parish derives from the medieval Latin 'Perranus in Sabulo' which means Piran in the sand. This intriguing name refers to the patron saint of Cornwall, Saint Piran, who founded an oratory church on the coast just north of Perranporth during the seventh century, which leads on to one of the main historic stories from the area. When the oratory church was abandoned, for St. Piran's Old Church it was believed that it's surrounding stream would protect it from the encroaching sand dunes, and this indeed was the case for several hundreds of years. However during the tin mining era, mining activities caused the stream to unfortunately dry up, which did undeniably lead to the oratory church eventually becoming engulfed by the dunes. In 1910 the oratory church was excavated, but the remains of the stone building are unfortunately again buried in the dunes at Penhale Sands.
