Penzance (Cornish: Pennsans) is a town, civil parish and port in Cornwall. It is well known for being the most westerly major town in the United Kingdom and situated in the shelter of Mounts Bay facing south-east onto the English Channel. The town has been granted a variety of royal charters from 1512 onwards and has a population of 21,168. Penzance (Pennsans), or "holy headland" in the Cornish language, refers to the location of a chapel nowadays called St Anthony's. Legend says that the chapel stood over a thousand years ago on the headland to the west of what was later to became Penzance Harbour. There is no known record or documentation mentioning an actual dedication to St Anthony and the tale appears to depend on tradition and, therefore, may be groundless. There is however an object (allegedly) remaining from this chapel, a carved figure, now largely eroded, known as "St Raffidy". This can be found in the churchyard of the parish church of St Mary's near the original site of the chapel.
Today Penzance is a thriving market town and holiday resort, offering fabulous walking and lovely beaches. Well placed to visit the entire West Cornwall peninsular and also for a quick hop across the waves to the Isles of Scilly, Penzance is a really super place to base yourself for a wonderful holiday.
