About Mullion

Mullion (Cornish: Eglosvelyan) is a village in Cornwall. It is situated on the Lizard Peninsular approximately five miles (8 km) south of Helston.  Mullion is close to the beautiful Gunwalloe Cove where the famous 'church on the beach' is located (St Winwaloe) (The church of Storms).  The parish also includes Mullion Island, an uninhabited island approximately half a mile (0.8 km) offshore from Mullion Cove. The island is home to large colonies of sea birds and owned by the National Trust.  There have also been some significant historical finds in Mullion parish, with evidence of prehistoric burial mounds, Celtic crosses and ancient chapel sites.  In more recent times there has been evidence of copper and china clay mining and also a World War II airfield at Predannack.   Mullion is the largest village on the Lizard Peninsula and is an important centre for local services and amenities as well as a popular tourist destination with shops, cafes and craft shops.  There is also a golf course close to Mullion.  Central to the village the mainly 13th century church of St Mellanus is renowned for its richly-carved oak bench-ends depicting biblical scenes, including that of Jonah and the Whale.  The roof is of the Cornish barrel type and the original timbers were supposed to have come from the Goonhilly Forest which covered Goonhilly Downs in mediaeval times. There are no nails in the oak timbers, which are wood-pegged.  The studs in the North door are wooden rather than iron. It is made of oak and is thought to date from the 11th century.  Mullion is the place where where the famous Marconi conducted his radio experiment to broadcast a message across the Atlantic in 1901 from nearby Poldhu cliff.
