Marazion (Cornish: Marghasyow) is a town in West Cornwall on the shore of Mount's Bay. St Michael's Mount is half-a-mile offshore from Marazion. At low tide a man-made causeway Saint Michael's Mount is accessed by a causeway, once walked by pilgrims in honour of the alleged appearance of Saint Michael. At other times visitors are ferried from Marazion to the Mount links the Mount to the town and at high tide, there is a passenger boat. As you would expect, Marazion lies within the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Almost a third of Cornwall has AONB designation, with the same status and protection as a National Park.
Marazion is a thriving tourist resort with an active community of artists who produce and sell paintings and pottery in the town's numerous art galleries.
The town of Marazion was not recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1088, although the remains of an ancient bronze furnace, discovered near the town, tend to prove that tin smelting was practised here at an early period. The town claims to be the oldest town in Britain, called Ictis by the Romans and was the major town in West Cornwall until the late medieval period when it was overtaken by Penzance, 2 miles (3 km) to the west.
