Lostwithiel (Cornish: Lostwydhyel) is a civil parish and small town in Cornwall. The name and its origin is a subject much debate and is too convoluted to record in this forum. However in the 17th century popular opinion was that the name came from a translation of Lost (a tail) and Withiel (a lion), the lion in question being the lord who lived in the castle. However current thinking seems to think that the name means "tail of a wooded area". According to the 2001 census Lostwithiel had a population of 2739. This is a Cornish Stannary town dating back to the 12th century and it retains oodles of character. Conversely it's one of the most bustling towns in Cornwall. With its abundance of antique shops (and auctions!), it lays claim to being the 'antiques capital' of Cornwall. You will find farmers markets, trendy little shops and a wealth of other country activities.
