About Looe

Looe (Cornish:-  'Logh,' meaning 'deep water inlet') is a small coastal town, fishing port and civil parih in Cornwall.  Looe has a population of 5,280 according to the 2001 census.  Looe is divided in two by the River Looe.   East Looe Cornish: Logh and West Looe (Cornish:- Porthbyhan, meaning 'little cove') being connected by a bridge.

The town is situated around a small, very active fishing harbour and along the steep-sided valley of the River Looe.  There is archeological evidence, (such as the so-called Giant's Hedge and the Stone Circle at Bin Down (from the Cornish "Bin Dun", meaning 'hill fort') on a hill above East Looe, indicates that the area around Looe may have been inhabited as early as 1000 BC, but this is not verified.

Today Looe is a busy fishing and seaside town and is always bustling with visitors and has a resident population of 5,280 (2001 census). It is well known for shark fishing trips.

Where is Looe?

The town is approximately 20 miles (32 km) west of the city of Plymouth and seven miles (11 km) south of Liskeard.  Newquay lies 27 miles (43.5 km) to the west and Exeter lies 48 miles (77 km) to the north east.

Where can our Looe taxis meet you?

We can of course pick you up from your home or holiday address, but if you need some landmarks where you could meet a taxi, a few are:- at the foot of the bridge by the Cornish Cross, or in the car park there - there's a phone box and a wall to sit on! - opposite the Swan Hotel (another seat) or the car park by the RNLI shop.  Given the narrow nature of the streets it would be well to consider the time of year and number of people about which may have a bearing on how long the driver takes to get through the town!
