Launceston, pronounced locally as "Lanson" is a town, ancient borough, and civil parish in east Cornwall. The Saxon name for this town was Dunheved. The A30 trunk road on which the town stands used to pass right through the town. It now crosses the River Tamar at Dunheved Bridge. The Town is the ancient Capital for Cornwall and the town the Duke of Cornwall visits to collect his 'feudal dues' which include a pair of white gloves, gilt spurs and greyhounds, a pound of pepper and cumin, a bow, one hundred silver shillings wood for his fires, and a salmon spear. HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales was officially proclaimed Duke of Cornwall at Launceston Castle in 1973.
Launceston is situated just over one mile (1.6 km) west of the River Tamar which marks the border between Cornwall and Devon and is often referred to as the "gateway to Cornwall".
The population of Launceston, St Mary Magdalene parish in the 2001 census was 7,135.
