Very Efficient Team!

"Very efficient team! Your driver found us on time, even though the house we were staying at was right at the end of a remote lane. The dispatcher had made a big effort to get all the location details. A pleasant chat on the history of the Lizard area made the journey to Redruth station an education. 5*s!"

About Gwithian

Godhyan is the Cornish word for Gwithian, which is a coastal village set on the north coast of west Cornwall. It lies three miles (5 km) northeast of it's nearest town, Hayle, and four miles (6.5 km) east of the picturesque St Ives, which lies on the opposite side of St Ives Bay. The Red River Inn, formerly Pendarves Armes, is the only public house in the village. The pub has taken its name from the Red River which enters the sea at Gwithian.  The river in turn takes its name from the the colour of the water, running a distinct red colour from the effluent discharged from Crofty Mine Camborne. In the past the red discolouration could be seen as far as a mile or so from the shore, but since the closure of the mine, this phenomena has ceased.  During the early 1800s the church and relics of St Gwithian (or, Gocianus) were excavated from the sand dunes. This church was built in AD 490. They were later allowed to be reclaimed by the shifting sands.  Gwithian is the patron saint of good fortune on the sea.

The beach is well covered by lifeguards during summer months (5 May-30 September), Easter Bank Holiday weekend and weekends during October.

Seasonal dog ban. Easter day to 1st October.

Events in Gwithian

Never mind about annual events, the events here just keep happening on a daily basis.  Swimming, fishing, boating, beach games and generally enjoying yourself are the order of the day in Gwithian!  You will see teams of local people 'litter-picking', and the local athletic club, Hayle Runners, having a 'run on the Towans'.  Running on sand dunes is very hard, so if you see them, admire(!), or sympathise with the poor soul at the back trying to keep up!

Where is Gwithian?

Gwithian is quite well situated for exploring the local area, with Hayle 3 miles  (5 km) SW, St Ives 4 miles (6.5 km) W, Camborne 3.75 miles (6 km) SSE,  19 miles (30 km) SW, Falmouth 14.5 miles (23.5 km) SE and Truro 15 miles (24 km) NE.  So whether you want to spend time on the beach, browse the Tate at St Ives, or shop in Truro or Falmouth, you won't have far to go!

Where can our Gwithian taxis meet you?

If you are wishing to be picked up from Gwithian, our Gwithian Taxis can meet you in the village, at the Red River Inn, or the entrance to the Towans, or even at the Sandsifter's by the main car park.  But don't forget, we can also pick you up from home, or from the reception area of your caravan / camp site or holiday park if you wish.
