Falmouth on the south coast of Cornwall is situated as a port on the mouth of the Fal River. Falmouth is a hub of activity in Cornwall with it's famous natural harbour, the third deepest in the world! This beautiful harbour is also famous for being situated at the beginning and end point of many round-the-world voyages including that of Dame Ellen MacArthur and Sir Francis Chichester.
Falmouth is also a hub of education within the county with it's civil parish being home to Falmouth University, on Woodlane, Exeter University's Cornwall Campus, at Tremough in Penryn, as well as Falmouth Marine School near the Marina.
Due to many different aspects of Falmouth, it is steeped in history and is a highly important location within Cornwall. Although the original town in the area was Penryn, Falmouth soon took precedence only 70 years after Henry the VIII built Pendennis Castle in 1540. The strength of the Castle's defences were tested both by the Spanish Armada during the 16th Century and the Parliamentary Army during the Civil War, during which Pendennis was renowned for being the second to last fort to surrender. Today, Falmouth remains as an important and popular location in the county. With it's beautiful hotels, long coastal stretches and a marina full of activities for all ages Falmouth is a must if you are visiting Cornwall.
